Ashoka East Africa’s celebrates its 25th Birthday

The Red Social Innovation team is happy to communicate on the 25th birthday of its long-term partner, Ashoka East Africa. Our two organizations share a common objective : making social innovation thrive. Through these 25 years, Ashoka has brought together a community of bold changemakers, inspiring fellows and like-minded partners. The RSI team wishes nothing but a continued success for Ashoka East Africa and congratulates it’s staff and community for all of their achievements.

As East Africa’s social innovation ecosystem continues to gain strength and visibility, Ashoka East Africa reaches two defining milestones this year : its 25th anniversary since its founding in 2001 and the election of over 100 Ashoka Fellows in the region. These achievements reflect both the organisation’s enduring dedication to systemic change and the expanding influence of citizen-led solutions across the region.

Since its establishment a quarter of a century ago, Ashoka East Africa has evolved from a modest regional initiative into a dynamic and influential hub for social entrepreneurship. The organisation now operates across Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, and Tanzania, while building meaningful connections with neighbouring countries. Over this period, it has elected and supported a network of over 100 Ashoka Fellows : visionary social entrepreneurs who develop and scale groundbreaking solutions to deeply entrenched systemic issues.

These Fellows are active in critical fields including healthcare access and delivery, quality and inclusive education, economic empowerment for marginalised and underserved communities, environmental conservation and climate resilience, disability inclusion, and mental health support. Ashoka East Africa provides these changemakers with sustained support through mentorship, strategic partnerships, increased visibility, and access to resources, enabling them to expand their impact and inspire wider systemic transformation.

Complementing this work, the organisation’s programmes and ecosystem-building initiatives actively foster a culture of empathy, collaboration, and active citizenship, creating the conditions for individuals and communities to drive positive, lasting change from the ground up. More recently, the organization started the Phase 2 of the Towards Improving Livelihoods for Smallholder Farmers Program, an initiative that promotes the integration of distributed renewable energy solutions within key agricultural value chains to improve resilience, productivity, and economic opportunities for farming communities.

“Looking back, the journey since 2001 has been one of remarkable growth, driven by the passion and resilience of social entrepreneurs who dare to create change in their communities across our region. I feel profoundly thankful for every Ashoka Fellow, partner, and supporter who has walked this path with us over the last 25 years. As we look to the future, I am inspired by the possibility of deeper collaboration with humanitarian partners such as the Red Cross in advancing our shared vision that Everyone a Changemaker.”

– Vincent Otieno Odhiambo, Regional Director, Ashoka East Africa

This dual milestone is more than a numerical landmark. It stands as a powerful testament to the growing maturity, vibrancy, and momentum of social entrepreneurship throughout East Africa. These milestones reflect the dedication and ingenuity of the Ashoka Fellows themselves, as well as the collective efforts of partners, supporters, and networks that have sustained and amplified our work over the years. It also signals the expanding influence of citizen-led innovation in shaping more equitable and resilient societies across the region.
